Angkor Wat is the reason most people come to Cambodia, and it delivers. The temple complex outside Siem Reap is the largest religious monument in the world — spending even half a day walking through Angkor Thom, the Bayon, and Ta Prohm, where tree roots grow through the walls, is a genuinely affecting experience. But Cambodia offers more than its headline attraction. Phnom Penh is a riverside capital with excellent food and sobering history. The coast around Kep and Kampot is quiet and underrated.
Cambodian cuisine doesn't get the attention of Thai or Vietnamese food, but amok, lok lak, and fresh seafood on the coast are well worth exploring.
The dry season from November through April is the best time to visit. For Australians, Cambodia is extremely cheap — the USD circulates alongside the riel, and a comfortable day costs very little by Australian standards. Visa on arrival is straightforward. Most travellers fly via Bangkok or Singapore, making it easy to combine with a broader Southeast Asia trip.
