The Maldives is the world's most extreme island chain — 1,200 coral islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, most barely above sea level, surrounded by some of the clearest water on the planet. The experience is centred on the resort: overwater bungalows above the lagoon, house reefs with manta rays and whale sharks accessible from the beach, and an almost total absence of anything except sun, sea, and silence. It's not a destination for travellers who find doing nothing difficult.
Diving and snorkelling are exceptional throughout. The thilas (submerged reef pinnacles) in the atolls host some of the densest marine life in the Indian Ocean.
The dry northeast monsoon season from November through April is the best window — calm seas, clear water, and low humidity. The wet season (May to October) brings rougher conditions and some resort closures. The Maldives prices in USD and is genuinely expensive — but budget and mid-range options on local guest house islands have opened the destination up significantly in recent years.
