New Zealand packs an extraordinary amount of landscape into two islands. Fiordland's dramatic fjords, the volcanic plateau of the central North Island, Queenstown's mountain scenery, and the Abel Tasman's golden beaches, all within a country about the size of the UK. The film crews who came to shoot The Lord of the Rings never really left, and neither do most travellers once they arrive.
The South Island is the showstopper: Milford Sound, the Remarkables, Franz Josef Glacier. The North Island counters with Rotorua's geothermal energy, the Bay of Islands, and Wellington's excellent food and coffee culture.
February to April are the prime window for New Zealand, balancing good weather, fewer crowds and competitive fares. The Window Score peaks at 85/100 in March.
