Vietnam is long and thin — 1,600 kilometres from top to bottom — and the differences between north and south are significant enough to feel like two countries. Hanoi has French colonial architecture, misty lakes, and Old Quarter streets unchanged for a century. Ho Chi Minh City is louder and faster. Ha Long Bay and Hoi An sit between them as two of Southeast Asia's most iconic stops.
The food changes as you move through the country: pho in the north, banh mi and broken rice in the south, the white rose dumplings and cao lau of Hoi An in the middle.
Vietnam covers a lot of latitude, so weather varies by region. Generally November through April is best for the south, while September to November and March to April suit the north and centre. For Australians, the AUD goes very far here — a genuinely comfortable trip costs a fraction of what the same standard would in Europe.
