Spain is consistently one of the most rewarding countries in Europe — a combination of excellent food, lively culture, great weather, and a city-planning tradition that makes walking around genuinely pleasurable. Barcelona has Gaudí, La Barceloneta beach, and a food market worth an hour on its own. Madrid has the Prado, one of the world's great art museums, and a tapas and nightlife scene that doesn't start until 10pm.
Beyond the two capitals: San Sebastián is arguably the best food city in Europe. Seville's old town is magnificent. The Camino de Santiago draws walkers from around the world.
Spain offers good value by European standards — costs are lower than Paris or London. Summers (June to August) are intensely hot, especially inland. The shoulder months of April to June and September to October are the best balance of weather, prices, and manageable crowds. Avoid arriving in August if you're visiting cities rather than the coast.
