Germany repays travellers who go beyond the obvious. Yes, Bavaria has Neuschwanstein Castle, Oktoberfest, and the Alps — all worth doing. But Berlin is one of Europe's most compelling capitals: a city still processing its 20th century history while running one of the world's best art, nightlife, and food scenes. Hamburg has a canal city centre and a music history that stretches back to the Beatles. The Rhine Valley's medieval castles are extraordinary in autumn.
Germany has excellent train connections, making it easy to combine multiple cities in a single trip. Berlin to Munich takes just over four hours by rail.
Germany is a long haul — typically 22 to 24 hours with a Gulf stopover. The EUR applies. The best time depends on your goal: summer for the Rhine and Bavaria; Christmas market season (November to December) in Nuremberg and Cologne is a genuinely special experience; winter sports in the Bavarian Alps run December through March.
