Greece offers what very few countries can: ancient history and brilliant beaches in a country that's genuinely easy to travel. Athens is the base — the Acropolis, the Plaka district, and a food scene that has improved dramatically in recent years. The islands are the point: Santorini's caldera views and clifftop towns are iconic. Mykonos has the beaches and nightlife. Crete is large enough to feel like a country of its own.
The lesser-known islands — the Dodecanese, the Ionian chain, the Cyclades beyond Santorini — often outperform the famous ones for authentic experiences at half the price.
Peak summer (July to August) brings intense heat, massive crowds, and high prices on the popular islands. May to June and September to October are the best windows — warm enough to swim, cool enough to explore, and noticeably quieter. For Australians, the EUR is relatively strong. Athens has good connections via Singapore and Dubai.
April to May are the sweet spot for Greece, balancing good weather, fewer crowds and competitive fares. The SweetSpot Score peaks at 87/100 in April.
February is typically the cheapest month to fly to Greece, with return fares averaging around A$1,535 — about 14% below the yearly average.
July scores lowest (35/100), with at peak-season crowds conditions and less favourable weather. If you can, plan around it.
Across the year, average temperatures range from about 9°C to 28°C. May usually offers the most pleasant conditions.
AUD is roughly in line with the Euro historical average.
