Dubai is extraordinary as an exercise in ambition. In under 50 years it has built the world's tallest building, some of the largest malls on the planet, and a tourism infrastructure that handles tens of millions of visitors annually — all in a desert. The Burj Khalifa is genuinely impressive in person. The old Dubai Creek and the gold and spice souks offer a glimpse of the city before the transformation. Desert safaris into the dunes at sunset are spectacular.
Dubai has also become a serious food city — driven by the diversity of its expat population and by significant investment in hospitality at every level.
Dubai is one of the most popular long-haul layovers for Australians — Emirates flights via Dubai are a standard route to Europe. It's also worth considering as a standalone winter escape: October through April is excellent, with warm temperatures and low humidity. Summers (June to September) are effectively off-limits for outdoor activity, with temperatures regularly exceeding 45°C.
