Los Angeles is less a city and more a collection of very different places that share a freeway system. Venice Beach and Santa Monica offer classic California. Silver Lake and Echo Park have the best independent food and coffee. Malibu has dramatic coastline with almost no one on it. Hollywood is more interesting as an idea than as an actual neighbourhood.
The food scene has become genuinely world-class — driven by the city's extraordinary ethnic diversity. Some of the best Mexican, Japanese, and Persian food in the world is here.
LA works well as either a destination in itself or a US west coast gateway. The weather is exceptional almost year-round — warm and dry from April through November. The main downside is cost: the USD is strong, LA has an expensive service culture, and driving is essentially mandatory, so factor in car hire on top of everything else.
